Amid skepticism around free trade, it may seem that globalization is on decline. However, Erik van der Marel at ECIPE argues that this is far from true. Rather, the nature of globalization is changing, he says. This "new globalization" is based on trade in digital services, R&D, data sharing, exchange of ideas and technology. In a similar vein, Masood Ahmed and Nancy Lee of the Center for Global Development argue that the new course of globalization will be shaped by four key drivers - comparative advantage along supply chains, demographics, global coordination on issues such as climate change, US-China trade tensions and political populism.
